from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse and Economically

        Insecure Populations"

Presented by:  TANIA THOMAS-PRESSWOOD, Ph.D., NCSP, ABSNP

Meets Maryland Board of Psychology Cultural Diversity Requirements

Workshop Level: All levels

This workshop is for psychologists and other mental health professionals  working with culturally diverse populations.

Program Description :

The United States is becoming increasingly diverse ; English language learners in U.S schools comprise 20% of the overall  student population, 18% of children in the United States live in poverty; and 43% of school age children represent a racial or ethnic group nationwide (NCES, 2008; U.S. Department of Education, 2007; U.S census, 2007). Developing the skills necessary to deliver culturally appropriate and effective psychological services to a diverse population is an essential component to the practice of all psychologists regardless of place of practice (i.e., clinic, hospitals, schools, mental health centers, etc.)  This workshop will discuss social and environmental factors that impact the behavior and adjustment of children and families from diverse backgrounds as well as the components of a culturally informed assessment and treatment. Lecture and group discussion will be used.

Participant Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the factors that impact the behavior and adjustment of children from culturally and Linguistically diverse and economically insecure backgrounds
  2. Identify and examine the components of a culturally competent assessment and treatment as well as factors that may impact assessment performance and interpretation of results
  3. Conceptualize ways of preparing reports that reflect the needs and experiences of children from economically, linguistically, and culturally diverse backgrounds
