This workshop is for licensed psychologists who want to know the legal and ethical risks and limitations of electronic communication and social media.
Program Description: This workshop will discuss the legal and ethical issues concerning electronic communications with clients and the use of social media, and generally with the impact of modern technology on practice management. We will analyze the factors impacting the use of email, Skype, Facebook, telephone, and communicating with clients out of state. We will look at how the role of the therapist changes, informed consent, and the potential legal issues associated with therapeutic communication with clients other than face-to-face in the office and the use of information available in a GOOGLE world. We will discuss electronic recordkeeping and file storage.
Learning Objectives: As a result of attending this workshop, it is expected that participants will be able to analyze legal and ethical issues concerning electronic communications with clients, the use of social media, and the impact of modern technology on practice management.
- Recognize when non-office communication is appropriate
- Obtain Informed Consent for non-office communication
- Recognize and avoid practicing in a jurisdiction without a license
- Describe the risks associated with electronic communication
- Explain whether a psychologist should have access to a client’s social media
- Analyze the client’s access to the psychologist’s social media
- Recognize the need for referral of a client who will be out of state
- Describe the implications of electronic record keeping and storage
About the Presenter: Richard Bloch is President of Shiling, Bloch & Hirsch, P. A. and has been in private practice in Maryland since 1972. He received his B.A. from the George Washington University and his J.D. from the University of Maryland School of Law. He is admitted to practice in Maryland, the United States District Court for the District of Maryland, the United States Court of Appeals, Fourth Circuit, and the Supreme Court of the United States. His practice focuses primarily on general business matters, trade association law, health law and civil litigation. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the Maryland Bar Association, and the Baltimore County Bar Association. Mr. Bloch has been General Counsel to the Maryland Psychological Association since 1979. He has written numerous articles and lectures frequently on legal and ethical issues pertaining to the practice of psychology and mental health.
Continuing Education Credit: CE is granted to participants with documented attendance and completed evaluation forms. Attendance is monitored. Credit will not be granted to registrants who are more than 15 minutes late, are absent more than 15 minutes during the session, or depart more than 15 minutes early. A certificate for three CE credits will be awarded upon satisfactory completion of this workshop. APP is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. APP maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

HANDOUTS: May be downloaded free of charge from the APP website prior to the event, or via free wi-fi on site. If you would like to receive paper handouts at the workshop, include an additional $5 with your registration fee to cover printing costs. Printed handouts will not be available at the workshop without prior payment.
